If you love some body…

jailHow many of you have heard the HR Department referred to as Corporate Cops, or HR Police, or Fun Police, etc?  No questions it’s the least favorite part of our jobs, but enforcing policy and procedures is a necessary evil…I get it.  That doesn’t mean it has to be the central focus of what we’re there to do though.  There’s a fine line between enforcing and criminalizing.  Can you enforce without bringing down the hammer of justice?  Can you enforce without “making an example” of your employees? Can you allow your managers to make decisions that they believe are best for the business?  I say “yes” to all of the above.  Here’s what I always say…”It’s not HR’s job to tell you what you can and can’t do; we can only tell you what might happen if you do or don’t.”  It’s about risk management, not capital punishment.  Admittedly, this can not be taken as a black and white interpretation.  It obviously has a lot to do with what your organization looks like, are you public/private, do you have in-house counsel, etc.  But at the end of the day, we’d all be better off if we asked ourselves “what’s the worst that can happen” before locking ‘em up.
